    21st Century Ideas: H2O Bubble's

    Under water living

With the rising of water by the year 2019 developments of underwater living has been made possible with communities surviving beneath the surface. Almost like Waterworld only without the pirates. Land will still be around although with air pollution not being addressed on time the quality of the air has deteriorated to a level where assistance is needed to filter out the carbon dioxide. So these bubbles have become a way to battle against both the decrease in air quality and rising water levels.

Many people have suggested that living under water is a plausible idea. However, a few problems exist for this concept, one of which I will explain and then ask you about now: The lack of sunlight would reduce the amount of food that you could grow, given that we would all be vegetarians since there would be no way to feed any sort of animal population that we would have. What kind of food supply would you have under water and how would you produce it? Keep in mind that our body needs a certain \\\"diet\\\" to survive.

How far underwater are we talking? Is this as matter of metres or miles? Could we have floating agricultural platforms on the surface, \\\'orbiting\\\' the subaqua settlement?

Fascinating. Dustin\\\'s comment re: mandatory vegetarianism makes this even more enticing a prospect for me! The infrastructure seems immense... Tarmenel must be an early pioneer of a bubbles settlement...

Btw, are there any research links supporting this idea? I\\\'m curious to learn more about the potential science behind this... please add links!

This needn\\\'t be a radical development to be successful - simply extending our living spaces beyond the coastline would create dramatic new opportunities for growth and housing. If we can develop afforable, water-tight(!) methods of constructing settlements that stand on the sea-floor and rise to the surface and above, there would be no problem with lack of sunlight or poor ventilation. We could harness energy from tidal-wind-solar sources to power these off-shore conglomerations. There\\\'s also potential to harness geo-thermal energy as we advance into deeper water and more sophisticed models.

At the moment its all just an idea so no real science behind any of the idea\\\'s flying around. I\\\'ve start and SuperStruct on this idea so feel free to join in. Like I mentioned in the outline there the idea would be to not go to far under water Lord Samwise, it could be a dual purpose project that could be placed in tidal area\\\'s where above water and under water modules could be built. I\\\'m sure that the water will wax and wane with the moon unless something drastic happens to the moon. As for food production I never though about the livestock production. Vegetarian\\\'s survive today without meat so any vegetarian\\\'s willing to give us their point of view would be helpful. Seeing as this would be an underwater project there could be a possibiltiy of keeping fish farms. A kibbutz I work on produces fresh fish in this way. The great thing about fish is that it is a healthier way of obtaining the proteins with the omega-3 benefits.

Do check the harsh and frightening reality of what might happen with seas. http://www.waterencyclopedia.com/A-Bi/Algal-Blooms-in-the-Ocean.html It\\\'s even worse, and quite ironic thinking about it. At several times in geologic history oceans may have been emerald green (and stunk of rotten eggs). http://www.ciat.cgiar.org/training/pdf/2008_04_03_R_Douthwaite.pdf http://www.earthscape.org/t2/chs01/chs01d/chs01df.html

I really hope we don\\\'t try to get ourselves in these underwater cities as a solution. It would only create a new playground for pollution. Sad, but true. I think we already maxed out our planet. We need to start thinking beyond planet earth. No sci-fi, no Star Trek. Simple outpost where we can continue building, like we do in our cities right now.

Many large pieces of land in the world have been reclaimed from the ocean using dikes and levees. However, as Hurricane Katrina and many other disasters have shown, land reclaimed in this way is quite vulnerable. One alternative that you don\\\'t mention is living on top of the water using man-made islands. This has been done in the UAE and elsewhere. However, it is quite resource-intensive to do so.

tdesigner: I think that outer space is the the next step. these Bubbles could form a stepping stone into space. as for pollution I\\\'m trying to find ways that this would actually act as a filter to get rid of the pollution and be a sort of safe haven for the airborne diseases such as ReDS. salynch: This is another possibility. I have the idea of a tidal comunity as I don\\\'t believe in a complete wiping out of solid land mass but we will be losing land. A floating island could be another way. These Bubbles could float and I have also stumbled across hydroponics and this is also above water.

The massive biomes created for the Eden Project here in the UK may well provide a useful blueprint for self-sustainable, bubble living...

Watertight plastic sheeting, a few acres of bloating PVs, robust pumps and filters, floating greenhouses, some airtight walkways to connect it all - I can see it before me, an extended family floating the oceans, glittering sunlight above, living in green airpockets beneath tents, around atolls or pacific island, growing food, totally off the grid. If you have the required skills you could last years in such a place.

I don\\\'t see it .... Apart from some island nations we\\\'re not actually short of land. The threat of rising sea levels is that the land which is most valuable to us tends to be cities built around ports which are, of necessity, at sea level. But there\\\'s plenty of land further in.

Floating islands are doing better as longterm resident structures, even though underwater havens are fantastic for our periodic retreats
