We have the means to distribute designs for everything we could need to the places where it is needed via the net. We need to improve out ability to manufacture locally from sustainable and recyclable material. Print solid objects from virtual design (we already could in 2008). Why have mass production in remote locations when single items can be made at the point of need?

I think you are exactly right and that this is a meaningful step towards a post-capitalist society. Obviously everything cannot be completely localized because of the way we've settled (try feeding all of NYC locally), but we have to take serious steps to create a new system of distribution from the ground up. I think victory gardens are a big part of this. Check out my superstructures as I think your thoughts are exactly in the direction we are trying to go.

This works in places where the population is small enough, but in dense urbanized areas we need companies - industry - that MUST work within strict guidelines - look at Cradle 2 Cradle - there's a C2C soperstruct - consider joining it. Personally my own business has a "100 mile diet", which I want to shrink. I upcycle with materials I get on my local freecycle, and at thrift shops, and for new materials I source within my community.

How could the colonists of Project ARK use on site manufacturing, in the variety of places they may be hiding, underground, subs etc.

rep rap and other 3D printers mean that open source designs can be printed and shared, altered and shared again. Not only can you print out a superhero toy instead of importing it from a toxic plastics factory, you can also create and share simple useful items like fishing lures and salt shakers. Open Design is the key. there is no copyright on a mesh.
