Grocery Store Robbery

The Revenge of the Reluctantly Reformed Steakeaters
Sierran

Another grocery store has been robbed.

This one was in a small town when I was visiting a friend, and the store employees can't believe it has happened.

Says the manager, "We are a part of the community. I could see it happening to a big chain store, or in some city, but never our family-run business, never in our hometown."

The town has recently become part of a ReDS zone, and healthcare costs have skyrocketed. Every inhabitant is feeling the effects of the zoning, and money, which never flowed in and out of a small town like this one particularly fast, has been in short supply with the economic slowdown in the zone.

Food prices worldwide have gone up, and it is harder to afford groceries for many families. Grocery store robberies, the kind when the store is broken into at night and both cash and food are taken, have steadily been rising.

However, the owner of the store is still perplexed. "We're just like them," she says. "We run a small business and have our struggles too." She also points to the number of home gardens, which can get quite large in a small town with lots of land. "Why target us? Why not take a carrot here and a head of lettuce there?"

The manager, who is the cousin of the owner, thinks he can answer that. "Most of the food products stolen last night were meats and cheeses, as well as various processed food. Few people have animals alongside their home gardens, and those that do usually only have few chickens. People miss the American diet--we're a society of reformed steakeaters, after all."
