Refugee Education Plan

Refugee Education Plan:

As the Minister of Education, my job is to teach the students while participating in ensuring the safety of the compound.  Our compound is on alert 24/7 which makes it virtually impossible to teach the children within a classroom setting.  My job consists primarily on my ability to travel to where my students are.  My students are productive members in the compound and the safety of the compound is their number one responsibility and priority.  To teach my students I must think outside of the box.  I must teach them in our present situation which may not be necessarily safe but then again, nothing is safe now.  I am the only one that can teach them because all the other members of the compound are busy with finding new ways of preventing the ReDS virus from killing us off.

We live in isolation but we are aware of what is happening around us.  We seek refugees. Many of our refugees have children who do not know what is happening around them and it is my job to tell them.  I explain to them the conditions and ways to ensure their survival and together we learn how to be fighters.  I teach them of the past and how life used to be very different.  I tell them that one day we will be able to go back to the simple ways of life.  I teach about hope, pride and determination.  My students are the next generation and it is my duty to teach them not to make the same mistakes that my generation made in the future.  We will find a solution.  We will be strong. We will save the earth and her inhabitants.  We may be small compared to others but we will persevere. This is what I teach to my students.

As we continue to live in isolation, my job adapts to the present situations facing the compound.  I teach the students the basics that they may need to combat the present situations.  I teach the codes or messages of the members so they may also be prepared in cause of an emergency.  My students are aware that life on Earth may end at any second.  I teach them not to fear but to hope for an end to ReDS.  I teach survival skills for what is more important at a time like this.  All that I hope for them to learn is how to survive.

This worries me. I keep erasing my comment here. I don't know how to say this any other way. It is dangerous and misquided to teach children that life on Earth may end any second. Fist of all, it simply isn't true. But much more importantly, children have basic developmental needs and their number one need is to know that they are SAFE and SECURE and that they will be looked after, that no matter what they face leaving home, there will always be a home to return to - that home can be as minimal as a pair of loving arms to return to each day but they need this. You cannot put the weight of the world on their shoulders to create "fighters" They learn resiliancy through having their basic needs met and even if they aren't having them all met - RECOGNIZING those needs as the norm. Children are much stronger than we give them credit for, but we don't create strong children by activating the fight or flight mechanism - just the opposite.
