Starting a superstructure is only the beginning. The real task is envisioning what it can do, how it will work, and who you need to work with. If you're not a member, consider joining now. If you are a member, be bold, jump in, and use the superstructure to start organizing for survival. Edit it, add to the vision, and make it real, online and off. And don't forget to rave.

  • Who We Need
Do you grow things? Do you cook? Our rural forebears may have done it all from scratch, but we modern city dwellers have our time split so many more ways. Let's take advantage of our individual skills to distrubute the work, and share with those who are unable to feed themselves.
  • How to join
What can you share? Do you grow tomatoes? Bake bread? Brew beer? Raise chickens for eggs? And what city are you in?
  • Mission
Connect urban food producers to share what they grow and make with their local community. We don't need to move to the countryside to have strong food networks.
  • What we can accomplish
    • Construct a barter marketplace for urban farmers and food producers\' goods.  Connect people who are producing food with those who need it.

Create GPS-maps of known fruit and nut trees in urban areas. Create green corridors between urban-gardens for pollinators. Protect our gardens from poachers and bio-pirates.

  • How this superstruct works
    • Let\'s build a database of who has what, and where each of us are. If we get enough people in one area, we can set up a market day and local groups can work on deciding how to trade and distribute their food.

Here's the start of an Urban Food Producers' map: http://www.platial.com/map/Urban-Food-Producers/509792 Based on 2008 data, but maybe we can figure out what's still there or been added, and what resources our home areas are missing.

I would like to suggest that the "Urban Food Producers' Coop" would be an ideal SUPERstructure, a primary hub for a number of the other Uban Food 'structs, such as the Rooftop Cultivation Association which I founded. I'm happy to state on the RCA Superstruct page that it is a sub-structure of the UFPC, and then list it on here as such. As we head into the final 1/3 of the project, I figure this might be a way to integrate 'structs - find an overacrching one, and then directly connect sub-structs to it? What do others think? • We should setup a GoogleMap to keep track of producers, corridors and anything that would make our job easier. - Jorge

I\\\'m using the Urban Edibles [http://urbanedibles.org] map to track public fruit trees, wild edible plants, etc for gleaning. Coverage is only Portland, OR though. Maybe it could be extended, or something similar built to cover a wider area?- spinnerin

@spinnerin: I don\\\\\\\'t know enough about plants to say, but I\\\'m wondering if a combination of a camera+gps tracker, with a sharp-eyed gardener or farmer checking out photos, would be sufficient first approximation data-gathering. Hey, do current open satellite photos have the ground-level viewability for looking for eats?-infrarad

@infrarad: How about using the Platial Nearby iPhone app to let people tag things as they go about their daily activites? I think plant identification will be much easier from ground level. Also, should we make a separate map of farms and food producers? And third, any votes to set up a mailing list so it\\\'s easier to talk about this? :) -spinnerin

Back in 2008 there were already active orgs connecting urban gardeners to people needing good healthy fruits and veggies. Village Harvest [http://villageharvest.org/] was started by a friend of mine -- I wonder what they are doing now?

I set up the mailing list: http://groups.google.com/group/urban-food-producers-coop Please join to continue discussing how we can build this struct.
