Starting a superstructure is only the beginning. The real task is envisioning what it can do, how it will work, and who you need to work with. If you're not a member, consider joining now. If you are a member, be bold, jump in, and use the superstructure to start organizing for survival. Edit it, add to the vision, and make it real, online and off. And don't forget to rave.

More about Superstructures

  • Share your seeds

  • Who We Need

Bio-engineers, gardeners, vegetarians, greenhouse-specialists, anyone who grows a garden.

For our campaigns: Outgoing people; artists; actors/actresses; digital-musicians;  video-editors; sponsor; (More details about the campaigns soon)

  • How to join
  • Mission

We encourage people who have gardens to share their seeds. Give seeds away, or just exhange for a seed that you need.

    Tomato, lettuce, arugula, brocolli, cucumber...ah!

  • What we can accomplish
    • We can encourage the diversity of our seed supply by educating about heirloom seeds and seed saving.

We can also set aside "seed gardens" to produce enough seed to share.

We can also provide seed to people just starting out their own gardens. We can consider these "Loaner seeds." Our seeds are free, but if you take them, you have to Join Share your seeds and provide seed from your new garden next year.

We can help ensure the preservation of heirloom varieties by coordinating a network of "varietal guardians" who commit to propagating and distributing particular strains year.

Families and friends start their own seed banks in their homes to take a personal role in survival.  Through use of the internet, agriculturalist share the principles for preservation and maintaining diversity.

  • How this superstruct works
    • Possibly we can use ning to create a group of people seeking and sharing seeds.

Another database with more functionality for barter exchange would be great.

In the absence of that setup, I'm just going to post here. I lucked into a surprising amount of radish seeds a while ago. They aren't heirloom or anything, but I'm willing to trade them to anyone who either offers their own seeds for trade, or does something else to assist the growth of this superstruct. --PlatonicJensen

  • Other information
    • Sign up as a "Seed Guardian" for your favorite heirloom varieties at http://superstruct.wikia.com/wiki/Share_your_seeds Unless we each take responsibility, these strains will not be around when we need them. Each has its unique strengths--we need to preserve this genetic diversity for the future
  • Discuss this superstructure
    • - How can we safely share our seeds? The majority of postal services won\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t allow seeds entering the country.

Consider flying seeds with a licensed escort.  Most countries will allow seeds, fungi and some cuttings to be transported across lines with a licensed official from national FBSDCA or your equivalent office.  Licensed escorts charge daily rates for transport services and I met one in Hawaii who is also a pilot.

This is why we\'re collaborating with the New Pony Express: They\'re a perfect way to move seeds.

      - Should we share transgenic seeds or only non-modified seeds? - What ar e the advantages and disadvantages of both modified and non-modified seeds? Which one suits best the needs of a domestic gardener, or someone who owns a little-size greenhouse?

Heirloom Seeds are best: [http://superstructgame.org/DiscussionView/60] Heirloom seeds are still the best choice for diversification of the crops, which means disease resistance. When you have heirloom crops you can also breed for local needs. An example is the Hopi Watermelons that we dry farm that have a very nutritious large seed. Some of them are unusually resistant to splitting and can be stored for many months.

You can actually create your own heirloom types. Each time you harvest, pick the best perfroming plants and let them go to seed, gathering enough seed to plant all your plants next year. Repeat this each year. Beleive it or not, it only takes 3 plant-generations of doing this for your plants to be a recognizeably distinct variety of the plant, specially suited to your locality.

What about the legalities of sharing seeds? Saving transgenetic seeds is a criminal offense - they are copyrighted.  It might not be an issue for the individual but in the green market trade it most certainly will be.   It is next to impossible to find non modified seeds in any crop that can airborne too, they've contaminated just about everything.

::  For those who plan on saving their seeds, they need to know how to properly store the seeds between the harvest and distribution so the seeds remain viable.

:: Seed bombing a tactic used by Guerrilla Gardeners is one way to distribute the seeds, as it is not dependent on a certain mode of transportation (i.e. foot, pigeon, airplane, etc.)

I suggest we make contact with the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Iceland. They haven't been in the news, much, but as far as I know they have been quietly continuing the preservation work they began back in '08. If we can identify varieties we want to bring back into circulation now, perhaps they could be pursuaded to provide stock. Anyone have contacts in the Icelandic Government? In college, I was on the fencing team with the son of the Icelandic ambassador to the U.S. I could try to see if I can make any contacts through him...
