Starting a superstructure is only the beginning. The real task is envisioning what it can do, how it will work, and who you need to work with. If you're not a member, consider joining now. If you are a member, be bold, jump in, and use the superstructure to start organizing for survival. Edit it, add to the vision, and make it real, online and off. And don't forget to rave.

More about Superstructures

  • Night Soil Collection Service

If you give a shit, we'll take your shit

  • Who We Need
Anyone who is willing to donate their shit, or try their hand at composting it. People who want to start local branches to serve their area.
  • How to join
Anyone can join. When you join, send me a PM with your email and I will forward you a copy of the Humanure Handbook in PDF form.
  • Mission
To provide people with simple, functional compost toilets, and to set up a service which regularly collects the accumulates "Humanure" and takes it to a central location for composting . The resultant soil could be used for any gardening purpose, perhaps available free for use or perhaps kept as the reward for dealing with it.
  • What we can accomplish
    • We can close the loop of the nutrient cycle to ensure that we don't pollute with our waste in innappropriate places (like drinking water) and that our growing soil doesn't deplete.

We can also save people a shit-ton of water.

  • How this superstruct works
    • You give people a toilet made from a 5 gallon bucket. They shit and pee in it instead of their flush toilet. We also provide the sawdust. Every morning we collect the night's shit as a service, and take it back to be composted safely somewhere locally. We also fight with city officials to make composting human waste a known option, and to adapt code to permit it.

Inputs: People to gather the stuff. The stuff. Sawdust. 55 gallon drums, sealable, 5 gallon buckets, biohazard stickerss, labels to mark the date. Heat. Space for long term storage.

      Outputs: Fresh compost. Heat.

Behaviors: Attracting vermin. Attracting law enforcement.

  • Discuss this superstructure
    • Great idea!

      Two concerns:

      1) some basic education is necessary for the "donors". Primarily, they should know what kind of illnesses and medication would render their "donations" unsafe for composting. Perhaps everyone who joins can sign a pledge that they know and follow the criteria.

      2) health concerns can be greatly reduced by avoiding a direct cycle of humanure to vegetable crops. Humanure compost can instead be used indirectly, such as to feed fruit and nut trees and bushes.
