Starting a superstructure is only the beginning. The real task is envisioning what it can do, how it will work, and who you need to work with. If you're not a member, consider joining now. If you are a member, be bold, jump in, and use the superstructure to start organizing for survival. Edit it, add to the vision, and make it real, online and off. And don't forget to rave.

  • Who We Need
Environmentalists, designers/architects, construction/builders, people who can train and maintain this facility.
  • How to join
  • Mission
We will discuss the design of a powerdome placed in the heart of Australia, that can feed off the solar, wind and thermal energy to create a renewable energy. It will also create jobs to help displaced people and move them into the middle of Australia, a place that has space for growing population.
  • What we can accomplish
    • create a powerdome in the heart of Australia. It will create renewable energy for the whole continent to use. It will create jobs and move people away from the over-populated coasts of Australia.
  • How this superstruct works
    • It will be a massive "powerplant" which will contain hectares of farms dedicated to the collection of solar energy, wind energy and thermal energy. Once this energy has been created, it will need to be transported using thick pipelines implemented to feed the ever-growing population of Australia.

  • Discuss this superstructure
    • Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) seems the way to go for Australia.  This incredible post from way back in 2007 (http://europe.theoildrum.com/node/2583) contains a diagram showing the area of desert required to produce the whole world\\\'s electricity demands.  It\'s a lot smaller than the rapidly-spreading Outback, and that was with the technologies of ten years ago!

I have a couple of concerns with the Powerdome plan though- it\'s going to take a whole lot of top-down centralised planning to build such a huge thing and put in place the High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) cables to transmit the electricity to all the disparate settlements in Australia.  I\'m not sure the impoverished Australian Government is in much of a position to do that just now, but I\'m also not sure they should want to.  Might it not be better to put in place a Superstruct to support local communities in developing their own local renewable power generation.  That would save massively on construction and maintenance costs, and would mean the kind of small-scale community action that seems much more achievable (not to mention much faster).  It would also mean there\'d be no terrorist threats to take out the whole power infrastructure of Australia in one go.

Also, don\'t forget it\'s not just electricity that Australia needs - although oilcars are becoming less popular, there\'s still a big need for liquid fuels out there ~ DarkOptimism
