    Every day, literally thousands of tons of uneaten food is wasted in any urban centre. Livefeed will serve as a grassroots effort to rescue food that is ready-to-eat, yet unwanted, and put it back into circulation.

  • How this superstruct works

    • In the mid-1990s, the advent of eBay enabled buyers and sellers of unlikely items to find each other instantly across the world, and Craigslist gave fluidity to the circulation of goods and services among residents of the same city. Other services followed; Couchsurfers has hooked countless backpackers up with a place to crash, and any number of dating sites have performed a comparable matchmaking function, connecting millions of improbable couples.  Livefeed will match food with empty stomachs, in real time.  It will eventually enable unfinished meals, fresh fruit, etc, to be bought and sold, and tracked, based on edible RFID tags, and self-sanitising food-drops (similar to vending machines) located around the city.  Highly granular network reputation systems will extend Trust across Livefeed to five or six degrees of separation (enough relational depth to include up 100% of participating individuals within any city). This arrangement, bolstered by flash-chemical analysis built into cellphone cameras, and a watertight legal liability regime, will mean that no edible food need ever be wasted again.

    • An example:  Devaang has a half-finished squid risotto in an Austin, TX restaurant and is about to go out clubbing -- he’s not taking it with him!  He takes a snapshot of the food cooling on the table, adds a note that he’s five minutes from leaving, and instantly those people within two degrees of separation in Devaang’s network and within a five-minute reach of the café (if their Livefeed accounts are set to “receive”) get the message.  Anita, a friend of Devaang’s ex-roommate Carl, and currently a little peckish, happens to be in the neighbourhood and Livefeed pings her about the available bite to eat.  Devaang and Anita have never met before, but in moments, Anita is happily finishing the remains of Devaang’s delicious risotto -- and what’s this? Do I detect some romance in the air too?

    • This superstructure reminds me that food webs are really malleable. I've been working on the Food Webbies (/SuperstructView/381) superstructure to do macro and micro-scale modeling of foodwebs, and this makes me realize that we really need to build in alternative models of food webs, of which this is clearly...well...several, I guess....KathiVian
